T.L. Cromwell is now a retired Correctional Captain. For over 21 years, she worked in the California prison system, walking the “Toughest Beat in the State.” Women make up 25% and 17.5% of that is Black women working in the California prison system are Black. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation found that women correctional officers were more likely to be sexually harassed or assaulted than their male counterparts. The report also found that women correctional officers were more likely to be victims of physical violence by inmates. After working and excelling at her job, Cromwell retired in 2015 and relocated to Texas to spend time with her beloved daughter and family. Reading, writing, traveling the world, and spending time with her family are what she enjoys most.

Cromwell worked for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation in two of the toughest male-only prisons, starting as a Correctional Officer and retiring as a Correctional Captain. She shares her experience working in an environment that was often mundane, mixed with incidents of extreme violence and terror.
Cromwell is currently working on her next book, a follow-up to Time Served.
